Instructor Rating – Class 4 (Helicopter) 

 

Successful completion of this course will qualify the candidate for the issuance of Class 4 Helicopter Instructor Rating issued by Transport Canada. The Instructor Rating will enable the candidate to work commercially as a flight instructor to give instruction toward the PPL-H, CPL-H and Night Rating, under the supervision of a Class 1 or 2 flight instructor.

The “Enrolment“ page will guide you in starting your training program and provide you with a list of ground school supplies required for the course.

 

Prerequisites 

The candidate must hold a Commercial Helicopter Pilot Licence and have a minimum of 250 hours in helicopters as Pilot-in-Command and have completed a minimum of 15 hours instrument time of which a maximum of 10 hours may have been completed in approved instrument ground trainers.

 

Ground School Requirements 

An applicant shall have completed a minimum of 25 hours of Instructor Rating ground school instruction which shall include:

  • practical application of the basic principles of learning and techniques of instruction;
  • preparation and use of lesson plans;
  • procedures for planning and presenting preparatory ground instruction, pre-flight briefings, in-flight instruction, and post-flight debriefings;
  • theory of flight required to teach the air exercises;
  • aircraft flight manuals and aircraft operating limits;
  • presentation of pilot decision-making concepts; and
  • the use of the Transport Canada Helicopter Flight Instructor Guide, Flight Training Manual, Part IV of the Canadian Aviation Regulations, and the appropriate Flight Test schedules and guides.

 

Flight Training Requirements


An applicant shall complete in helicopters a minimum of 30 hours of dual flight instruction on overall pilot proficiency and the presentation of all exercises set forth in the Flight Instructor Guide and shall include a minimum of 5 hours of training in the teaching of instrument flight skills. A maximum of 5 of the 30 hours may be conducted on an approved helicopter simulator or flight training device.

 

Notes:


Holders of an ATPL-H or aeroplane Instructor Rating may be credited with 10 hours of flight training and 10 hours of ground school requirements.

Holders of an Instructor Rating issued by another country may be credited with some or all of the flight time requirements and a majority of the ground school requirement, depending on experience.

 

Written Examination Requirements


An applicant shall obtain a minimum of 70% in each of the following written examinations:

  • Flight Instructor Rating - Helicopter - Class 4 (HIRAF); and
  • Flight Instructor Rating - Helicopter - Instrument Instruction (FIREN).

Flight Test Requirement

An applicant shall complete a Class 4 instructor flight test with a Transport Canada authorized Pilot Examiner.

Note:

If training is conducted away from our base, the client will be responsible for cost of the instructors travel, accommodation, and meals.
